Inexpensive plastic hand labellers are sold at most discount retail stores and as much the same as they were twenty years when first released for consumer use. These hand labellers have a round wheel on the front with all the letters of the alphabet and numerical digits from zero to nine. The wheel on the hand labeller must be turned so that the character you desire to print is close to an indicator. A type of "trigger" mechanism on the hand labellermust be pressed or squeezed after each character placement to imprint the laminated strip within the hand labeller. These basic hand labellers usually have a compartment that opens and holds the laminated labels until they are used.
The more advanced hand labellers almost don't seem to be from the same class as the basic hand labellers. They have an actual keypad instead of a wheel and characters can simply be punched in with the touch of a finger. A screen digitally displays the characters until a certain button is pressed and the label prints out all at once instead of character by character. While all this hand labeller technology is nice and can speed up thelabelling process by quite a bit. It comes with a couple of distinct disadvantages. Not only are these hand labellers much more costly than the plain plastic models, they are also more difficult to learn how to load and maintain.
